After working for 17 years as a Mechanical Engineer in a chemical manufacturing environment, Nigel joined Hatchers in 1997 as a Trainee Solicitor after studying Law at Wolverhampton University. He qualified as a solicitor in 1998.
Areas of Expertise
With Nigel’s industrial background he was destined to specialise in employment law. He had a particular interest in advising employers ranging from private limited companies, PLC’s, partnerships, schools and charities.
Nigel advises on all aspects of employment law relating to the modern workplace. This includes staff recruitment, contracts, disciplinary and grievance matters, redundancies and reorganisations, the effects on staff where there is a transfer of a business, compromise agreements, avoiding discrimination and bullying as well as defending or bringing all types of employment tribunal actions.
Training managers of businesses on handling workplace disciplinary matters fairly, and avoiding discrimination in the workplace, is of particular interest to Nigel, as well as delivering seminars on all aspects of employment law.
Hatchers Employment Team is recognised by the UK Legal 500 publication for its legal expertise and service delivery.
Highlight of his career
Whilst qualifying after years of studying was a milestone, the highlight of my career to date was becoming Chair of Hatchers’ Management Board in 2012.
Going the extra mile for his clients
Nigel always likes to turn work around faster than promised and will never take for granted the confidence placed in him by the company he is working for; particularly as dealing with often difficult personnel issues can become very heated and stressful.
In his own time
Nigel lives in Shrewsbury with his wife, two sons and dog – and knows his place!
He enjoys family activities, these invariably include the great outdoors, cycling and whenever possible, fly fishing with his boys.

- Favourite food/drink – a combination of my eldest son’s home-made sushi and Hobson’s beer!
- Personal ambition – to be able to play a musical instrument alongside my wife and sons (who are all musically proficient)
- Likes / Dislikes – I love spending time with family and friends, particularly on holiday, and dislike the dark British winter and a lack of humour
A successful businessman once told Nigel that the reason he sought employment law advice from him was because he’s not like the usual solicitors he had used in the past!
This was a great compliment resulting from Nigel’s pragmatic approach to often difficult problems developed over many years in a manufacturing environment as an Engineer.
