Why did you apply to Hatchers for a training contract?

I was determined to work for a friendly, down-to-earth firm which could provide me with a high standard of training across many areas of the law. I wanted to be exposed to high quality ‘real’ work and be able to make a contribution to the firm. I felt Hatchers could provide all of this and I have not been disappointed.

Explain the application process…

I came across Hatchers when I did work experience during a summer break from uni. I stayed on throughout the summer providing secretarial cover. I heard they were recruiting for trainees and, after speaking to the practice manager, training partner and current trainees, I put in my application. When I was offered the job I didn’t have to think twice. Hatchers allowed me to take my training contract on a part-time study basis, taking my LPC over two years at the weekends. This suited my circumstances perfectly and meant that I was able to start working as soon as I graduated.

What happened when you started?

I attended an informal reception with the partners and team leaders, which was a great opportunity to meet the rest of the firm and enjoy a few drinks. My first seat was in residential property and I was assigned to Jacinta Walmsley, a partner and head of residential property, who was to be my mentor. Jacinta introduced me to Hatchers’ working practices and if I had any queries Jacinta and the other members of the team were always happy to help.

What experience will a Hatchers’ trainee get?

The work will be very varied, usually in four areas of the law, so you gain experience in commercial and high-street work. Hatchers are also very willing to accommodate any preferences trainees have. After six months, I transferred to my second seat, in the commercial litigation team.

Do you know yet what area of the law you want to specialise in?

No, I want to get as much experience as I can in different areas of the law and then base my decision on my experiences during my training.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a legal career?

Be prepared to work hard, be yourself and enjoy every minute of it! And get involved in as much as you can. The local Trainee Solicitors Group (TSG) and Young Professionals Group provide great opportunities to meet people on a social as well as professional level. In fact I have just been elected to take over as chairman of the Shropshire TSG. I replace my colleague Hannah Burden, who qualifies in October, and my fellow trainee Martyn Ruscoe has been appointed treasurer/secretary for the coming year.
