Hannah is now a solicitor working in our comercial property team. Below, she talks about her experience as a trainee with Hatchers

Why did you apply to Hatchers for a training contract?

I had completed two work experience placements at Hatchers while I was in my second year at university and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I was just so impressed with the firm – it’s a very friendly place to work and has an excellent reputation in the county and the surrounding area.

Explain the application process…

During my second placement I worked closely with Nigel Harrison, who heads the employment law team, and he suggested that I apply for a training contract for the 2005 intake. I applied in May 2005 and was invited for an interview to include a short presentation on any topic of my choice. I chose horse breeding as I have some experience of this. The interview itself was fairly relaxed and the partners interviewing me were very easy to talk to.

What happened when you started?

I had an initial meeting with the firm’s training partner Jacinta Walmsley and together we drafted my training schedule for the next two years. My first seat was with the family law team, who quickly made me feel at home. During my first few months with Hatchers I had regular meetings with the practice manager who ensured that I was introduced to all members of the firm including other trainees.

What experience will a Hatchers’ trainee get?

The firm is very accommodating in terms of training and individual interests. During each each seat I have worked closely with the team manager and had excellent exposure to a wide range of client matters, including residential and commercial property and now in wills & estate planning. As a trainee you need guidance and support but also a certain degree of independence to encourage you to develop confidence and experience – Hatchers provides the perfect balance.

Do you know yet what area of the law you want to specialise in?

For me, it’s commercial property law. I would also love to get into planning and development and agricultural property in the future.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out on a legal career?

Work experience is absolutely key. It is an excellent way for you to get to know a firm and for a firm to get to know you. Don’t just see it as a necessary evil for your CV. There are many, many types of law firms out there – try to narrow down as soon as possible what type of firm you want to work for.

Also, get involved in local professional networking groups, they are an excellent introduction to the business world and provide a great opportunity to make new friends. Hatchers are very supportive of their staff getting involved in social events and networking. I helped set up the Shrewsbury Young Professionals Group and have been Chairman of Shropshire Trainee Solicitors’ Group.
